This is the part that trips people up. Some schools truncate, meaning they just chop off everything after a certain number of decimal places without rounding up. A GPA of 3.4666666 truncated to two decimal places becomes 3.46, full stop, no matter what comes after.
Other schools round normally, where 3.4666666 would round up to 3.47 because the third decimal digit is a 6. That's not a huge gap in this example, but stack enough of these differences across a transcript and a cutoff like "3.5 or higher for the dean's list" starts to feel arbitrary depending on which method your registrar's office happens to use.
And it gets even more specific than rounding versus truncating. Some institutions round at the very end, after computing the full GPA. Others round each individual course's grade point contribution before summing everything up, which can produce a slightly different final number even from the exact same set of grades. Two students with identical transcripts, run through two different calculation orders, can land on two different official GPAs.
Plus and Minus Grades Add Another Layer
If your school uses a plus/minus system, like A-minus being worth 3.7 instead of a flat 4.0, that's another spot where schools diverge. Some cap GPA at 4.0 even if you have an A-plus, treating it the same as a regular A. Others actually award 4.3 for an A-plus, which can push a GPA above the "perfect" 4.0 scale entirely. Neither approach is wrong, they're just different conventions, and your transcript reflects whichever one your specific school picked.
The grades themselves aren't where the disagreement happens. It's everything that happens to those grades after they're earned, the rounding, the order of operations, the plus-minus scale, that quietly shapes the number on your transcript.
This matters more than it sounds like it should, because so many real decisions hinge on GPA cutoffs that look precise but are built on inconsistent rounding rules underneath. Scholarship committees, grad school admissions, even some employers, all treat GPA as an exact, comparable number, when in practice it depends heavily on the calculation method behind it.
Weighted GPAs Make It Even Trickier
High schools add another wrinkle with weighted GPAs, where honors or AP classes get bonus points to reflect their difficulty. An A in a regular class might be 4.0, while an A in an AP class is 5.0 at some schools. This is meant to reward students for taking harder courses, but it also means a "4.0 student" at one school and a "4.0 student" at another aren't necessarily comparable at all, especially once you add unweighted versus weighted GPA into the mix.

None of this is complicated math on its own. It's just easy to assume your school's GPA works like every other school's, and that one bad assumption is usually where the confusion actually starts.
