Baldur's Gate 3 is Larian Studios' return to the Baldur's Gate series after a two-decade gap, built on Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition rules rather than the real-time-with-pause system of the earlier games. It launched into early access in 2020, spent three years gathering feedback from players, and reached a full 1.0 release on August 3, 2023, with console versions following shortly after.
Set in the Forgotten Realms, the game opens with the player character infected by a mind flayer parasite, unlocking strange abilities while racing to find a cure before losing their humanity entirely. From there, the story branches heavily based on player choices, companion relationships, and how far a player is willing to lean into the parasite's corrupting influence.
Why Critics and Players Both Love It
Baldur's Gate 3 holds a Metacritic score in the 96 range on PC, alongside a 9.1 user score, an unusually tight alignment between critic and player sentiment for a game this large and this long. Reviewers consistently point to the sheer density of reactivity: companions who remember and comment on player choices, environmental interactions that solve problems outside of combat, and a turn-based combat system that rewards creative use of terrain, spells, and items over simply picking the strongest option.
Co-op and Replayability
Up to four players can play through the campaign together, either online or in local split-screen, with each player controlling their own character and making independent dialogue choices that can create genuine friction or alliance between players. Combined with multiple origin characters, several distinct endings, and companions whose storylines change significantly based on player decisions, Baldur's Gate 3 is built explicitly around multiple playthroughs rather than a single defined path.
Should You Play It If You've Never Played D&D?
Yes. The game handles rules explanations well for newcomers, with tooltips and an optional narrator who fills in the gaps that a human Dungeon Master would normally cover. Familiarity with Dungeons & Dragons helps you get more out of character build options, but it isn't a requirement to enjoy the story or the combat.
Baldur's Gate 3 rewards curiosity: trying the weird dialogue option or the unconventional spell combo is usually more interesting than the safe choice.
Given its length, often 75-100+ hours for a single full playthrough, this isn't a game to rush. Most players get the most out of it by taking their time with companions and side content rather than beelining the main quest.
